Welcoming New Staff Member Em Whalen

Join us in giving Sustainable Conservation’s newest staff member, Em Whalen, a warm welcome!

With over ten years of experience as a soil scientist, Em Whalen supports the research and analytical needs of the Solutions in Our Soils and Waste Not programs as the organization’s Environmental Data Analyst. Prior to joining Sustainable Conservation, Em worked as a researcher at a Bay Area non-profit organization studying historical land use change impacts on soil health and implications for contemporary climate change resilience. Before that, Em completed a Ph.D. and M.S. at the University of New Hampshire, conducting research on soil microbes and their role in building soil organic matter and healthy soils under climate change.

Em holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of Vermont, her home state. In their free time, Em enjoys hiking and camping with their partner and dogs, and singing in an Oakland-based DIY choir.
