Please join us for one of our favorite annual traditions. If you are local, or happen to be visiting the Bay Area that week, we’d be delighted to have you join us.
RSVP to Leah Katz Ahmadi at [email protected]
Current field tour information:
9:00am We will meet in Watsonville at Cassin Ranch and will board a bus for the tour. Dr. Daniel Mountjoy, Sustainable Conservation Director of Resource Stewardship, will illuminate what water management on the Central Coast and Pajaro Valley looks like today.
9:45am First tour stop: We will hear from Driscoll’s Berries representatives at Butier Demonstration Farm, a farm with rental space for four growers to experience what it is like to farm with substrate before they make a significant investment to do so. Substrate is a farming strategy that enables the growing of berries to continue in Watsonville but increases runoff rates and potentially causes flooding. The demonstration farm has a pond that catches water which is then recycled.
11:00am Second tour stop: We will hear from Santa Cruz and Monterey County Resource Conservation Districts about how our collaboration is improving the efficiency of water and fertilizer management practices.
12:00pm Third tour stop: We will visit the Bokariza basin, an area that captures runoff for groundwater recharge. This novel approach to water management has important implications for the region.
1:00pm We’ll return to Cassin Ranch for an informal lunch and continued conversation.
